#VitalVegAthon Challenge 2018

We would like to invite you all to join us in a veg challenge to run from 1st to 31st January 2018. Despite being super keen fruit and veg eaters normally, we at Vital Veg are guilty of not eating enough veg from time to time. We find it especially tricky during the festive season, what with long hours on the road to visit friends and family, lots of eating out, eating Christmas cake, eating mince pies, eating ice-cream at the pantomime (oh yes, we do!) and an overall tendency to cook less while in festive holiday mode, especially when away from the farm.

So we thought we'd give ourselves a little challenge to see if we can quickly get ourselves back on the straight and narrow after the festivities have ended, starting on January 1st. Recent research has shown that if you eat 9 or 10 portions of veg/fruit per day this has the optimum beneficial impact on your health.  Fewer than 30% of people in the UK eat even 5 portions of fruit and veg per day.

With this #VitalVegAthon Challenge, it would be great to see if we can attain the giddy heights of Optimal Fruit and Veg eating in January. So we’ve created a ‘group’ page in Facebook, where anyone who’d like to can join us, support each other with photos and recipe ideas, info on any great eateries that serve up fabulous veg (and proper portions of it!), share our successes and failures, and perhaps add a little spirit of competition between family members, colleagues, friends, and all you lovely veg fans out there. Perhaps this could be a way to encourage youngsters who are reluctant to eat their veggies too!

So here’s the challenge: Keep a record of all the portions of fruit and veg you eat every day during January 2018. Write it on your calendar, or on the printed sheet in your veg box this week - you can copy it or download and print more copies from the group page at:

Award yourself a BRONZE Medal for each day you eat 3-4 portions of fruit and veg (the minimum needed to start seeing a real improvement in health). You get a SILVER Medal for each day you eat 5 or 6 portions – the NHS’s rather modest target. Get a fabulous GOLD Medal for the days you eat 7 or 8 portions – now your health is REALLY getting a boost! And when you achieve the Optimum 9 or 10 portions, award yourself a splendid PLATINUM Medal! At the end of the month, tot up your daily totals, divide by 31 to get the average, and award yourself the appropriate overall Medal of the Month!  Good luck, and good health - may the Vital Veg be with you!
